The male Australian
Brush-turkey Alectura
lathami hatches and raises the young alone. One or
more females mate with the male who then keeps the eggs
in a large mound of rotting vegetation. The heat produced
by the rotting vegetation turns the mound into enormous
incubator. The male carefully modifies the mound to keep
each egg at the ideal temperature.
